Consuming mushrooms has already been proven to be delicious, but now there’s also evidence pointing to the possibility that they can lower the risk of depression! The new study, conducted by Penn State University and published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, used data on diet and mental health collected from over 24,000 American adults between 2005 and 2016.
Since mushrooms contain numerous bioactive compounds associated with reduced anxiety, the researchers observed a major connection between their consumption and lower odds of depression after accounting for socio-demographics, major risk factors, self-reported diseases, medications and other dietary factors.
So next time you order a pizza or go grocery shopping just remember that mushrooms can keep you happy, and not just because of their deliciousness (although we think that also plays a major role).
