Calcium is essential for bones as well as muscle function. More than 90% of the body's calcium is stored in bones and teeth. The bones are used as a "warehouse."
What does research reveal? Vegans with calcium intakes of more than 525 mg/day experienced no difference in fracture risk, compared to omnivores and vegetarians. Greater intake of legumes and meat substitutes may reduce risk of hip fracture and provide greater protection than that of meat.
